“Sisters are doing it for themselves.” “Girl Code.” “We ladies just gotta stick together.” In a society that remains, for the most part, ‘a man’s world,’ phrases like these offer empowerment, glimpses into solidarity and often become a rallying cry for women to step up and become allies on one another’s behalf.

Sometimes, however, there are women who seem to forget that a little principle called ‘reciprocity’ is required: in other words, before they call other women disloyal and ‘homewreckers,’ for example, that they need to have intact foundations and exhibit loyalty themselves. One loses credibility and comes off as a hypocrite extraordinaire if one is quick to call other women ‘backstabbers’ while they’re constantly wielding sets of metaphorical knives. Most of us have dealt with this type of duplicity at one time or another, but it’s rarely been as blatant—or as viral—as the case of reality TV star Khloe Kardashian.

As the youngest of the (in)famous Kardashian sisters, Khloe has a couple of reality shows under her belt and is seen most often on E!’s Keeping Up With the Kardashians. While she has shown entrepreneurial flair via business ventures with her sisters, Khloe also shares her siblings’ tendencies to pursue men that are already engaged or ‘boo’d up’ with other women. These anti-‘girl-code’ behaviors became a viral topic of discussion recently when Khloe blamed the break-up with her daughter’s father, basketball player Tristian Thompson, which happened in 2018, on an alleged tryst with Jordyn Woods, a friend of her half-sister Kylie Jenner. Never mind the fact that Tristian was himself already involved with a pregnant girlfriend (also ironically named Jordan) when she conceived baby True, and constantly cheated on Khloe with multiple women before and after she gave birth. I guess Khloe also thinks its immaterial that she married Lamar Odom a month after he left his fiancée of ten years in 2009 and continued, time again, to peruse her girlfriends’ partners to claim as her own. Khloe and her sisters still attempted to portray Jordyn as the villain and herself as the victim across various social media platforms until a longtime family friend of Woods, the well-connected and equally famous Jada Pinkett Smith, offered her a forum of own to explain her side of the story via her popular FB web series, The Red Table.

Soon after Jordyn explained the extent of her so-called betrayal to Jada—-allegedly receiving an unexpected kiss from Travelin’ Tristian, nothing more—-many in social media also quickly pointed out the many personal fouls that Khloe and her sisters committed in the name of love (*cough, ratings*): “You ain’t care when Tristian cheated on you the first fifty-eleven times,” one stated on Twitter to Khloe, “Why do you care now?”

Now that Jordyn has spoken her piece and Khloe’s finally decided to place more of the blame with Travelin’ Tristian, maybe some sliver of positivity can arise and a few lessons can be learned, for True’s sake if nothing else. Fame and money can’t replace class, for one, and two, make sure to sweep around your own front door before criticizing another person’s porch. There’s also sage advice from Divorce Court’s Judge Toler that the Khloe should heed: ” Never let a man tell you he doesn’t want you more than once.”

But maybe, ultimately, the laws of the universe apply here, the universe we all dwell within no matter what our last names and how wealthy, or regular, we are: treat others the way you would like for others to treat you, and don’t expect a tidy ending—-long-term, that is—-with unclean hands. Karma is real and what goes around always manages to boomerang right back.

Will Khloe or her shady sisters learn from this fiasco? Maybe. But if one less viewer decides to stop throwing ‘girl-code’ out the window just to have a(nybody’s) man, the drama—-personal and otherwise—might have been worth it in the end.
